Sometimes affirmations feel inspiring. Other times, they feel fake—like you’re lying to yourself. The truth is, affirmations can be deeply supportive, but only when they work with your nervous system instead of against it.
Here are five ways to make them more effective:
1. Match your current state.
Don’t jump from “I’m scared” to “I am safe.” Validation builds trust and creates a bridge to more expansive states. Instead, begin with acknowledgement: “I notice I feel unsafe right now, and that’s okay.”
2. Involve your body.
Affirmations don’t work as well if they are just mental.Your body needs to feel the affirmation. As you say: “I am learning to be kind to myself.” try placing your hand on your heart, take a deep breath, or gently stretch.
3. Focus on process, not perfection.
Progress-based affirmations feel more believable and reduce pressure. Try “I am building confidence” instead of “I am confident.”
4. Choose your moment wisely.
When your system is highly activated, affirmations may feel out of reach. Use them during grounded or regulated states, when your body and mind are open to new possibilities.
5. Be specific to your needs.
Generic affirmations like “I am blessed” may fall flat. Instead, target the areas that you would like to have a different relationship with. For instance if you are focusing on boundaries try “I am learning to protect my energy” or “I am allowing my body to soften.”
When affirmations feel authentic, embodied, and specific, they become powerful tools to help us to change our relationships with things that get in the way of the wellness we desire. The key is gentleness—working with your nervous system’s natural intelligence, rather than overriding it with forced positivity.
